Art 211 - Media, Techniques & Inquiry For Secondary Schools
Bloomington Jr. High School

IPTS (2013) STANDARD 2 - Content Area and Pedagogical Knowledge - The competent teacher has in-depth understanding of content area knowledge that includes central concepts, methods of inquiry, structures of the disciplines, and content area literacy. The teacher creates meaningful learning experiences for each student based upon interactions among content area and pedagogical knowledge, and evidence-based practice.

Description:

This project asked students to create a surrealist, split, self portrait from an ebony pencil, photo transfer.  In my example, after transferring the photo, I split it roughly down the middle and chose one half for realism and one for surrealism. I included at least 3 symbolic elements that represent myself, and added a melting effect along with saturated colors to make it more surrealist.

Rationale:

My example shows all aspects of the project that students are expected to have. This projects allows for creative freedom and representation while also practice basic art skills.

Student Artwork Gallery

My Art 211 clinical allowed me to create and teach a 10 day, culturally responsive unit plan. I asked my students to create a surrealist, split, self-portrait inspired by Frida Kahlo and modern day portrait artists. I started the unit with a short lecture on Frida Kahlo and modern day portrait artists: Kehinde Wiley, Gerald Lovel, and Alim Smith. Students participated in a class and small group discussions about how these artists show surrealism, symbolism, and culture in their work. I then asked my students to complete at least 3 practice sketches of surrealist, symbolic elements they could use in their own portrait to represent their culture. The students had two weeks to complete their self portrait. I was pleasantly surprised by how many of them embraced the opportunity to use bold color and design in their composition.

Professional, Advocacy, & Leadership (PAL)

PAL 1

IPTS (2013) STANDARD 9 - Professionalism, Leadership, and Advocacy - The competent teacher is an ethical and reflective practitioner who exhibits professionalism; provides leadership in the learning community; and advocates for students, parents or guardians, and the profession.

Description: I visited The Walker Art Museum & Sculpture Garden in Minneapolis Minnesota.

Rational: This visit gave me great ideas for new ways to use classic mediums in a contemporary style. There were mixed media, 2D, and 3D pieces on display in the walker. I was able to explore classic and new art alike. Through this expierence I was able to get ideas for my own practice, and my students as well.

Description: I visited the Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Rational: At the Dali Museum, I learned more about surrealism, and how it can be shown in landscape and portraiture alike. I was able to apply this knowledge to the surrealist unit plan I was building at the time. I shared my experience with my students, and showed examples to help them better understand surrealism during their assignment.

PAL 2
IPTS (2013) STANDARD 9 - Professionalism, Leadership, and Advocacy - The competent teacher is an ethical and reflective practitioner who exhibits professionalism; provides leadership in the learning community; and advocates for students, parents or guardians, and the profession.

Description: I attended the National Art Education Association Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Rational: The NAEA Conference provided me with many resources, materials, ideas, and inspirations for teaching. I learned more about how to expand upon traditional art, and how to let students express themselves. The information I learned from NAEA is applicable at any age level and often times in more than one content area. I shared what I learned with my classmates and Cooperating Teacher to give them new student led lesson ideas.

Description: I arranged a student artwork display in Bloomington Jr High School. These are art works created by my 8th grade students from the self portrait unit I taught.

Rational: This display taught me easy, and efficient ways to arrange artworks. It also taught me how much students and faculty alike enjoy seeing artwork displayed. Students were excited to see their work in the hall, and faculty complimented the class on how nice their work looked.
